The modern tarot card deck consists of 78 cards, each rich with symbolism and psychic meaning. The deck is primarily divided into two groups:

  1. Major Arcana – 22 cards with powerful images:

    • The Fool, The Magician, The High Priestess. The Empress, The Emperor, The Hierophant, The Lovers, The Chariot, Strength, The Hermit, Wheel of Fortune, Justice, The Hanged Man, Death, Temperance, The Devil, The Tower, The Star, The Moon, The Sun, Judgement, and The World.

  2. Minor Arcane – 56 cards:

    • Forty cards in four different suits of ten – traditionally batons or wands, cups, swords, coins or pentacles Sixteen court cards of four per suit: the page, knight, queen, and king

The origins of the Tarot are shrouded in myth and mystery. Some theories place their origin in the ancient religions and mysticism of Egypt; however these cannot be proved. The earliest reliable information on record is that the Tarot card deck originates from Italy in 1442; these decks were originally called carte da trionfi or "cards of the triumphs", which later simply became Tarocchi.
